PSBAA Snapshot

Every year, the Public School Boards' Association of Alberta (PSBAA) publishes a Snapshot, using data gathered from its member Public School Boards and publicly available resources, such as those from the Government of Alberta. Through an evidence-informed approach, the Association hopes to increase understanding of Public Schools and some of the realities they face in a rapidly evolving education landscape.

PSBAA September Snapshot 2026

The Association is pleased to share its inaugural PSBAA Snapshot this September. This year’s Snapshot contains several topics, including student population trends, complexity teams, school projects and modular classrooms.

Key Findings

Student Population Trends

The Alberta Public School student population has had an increase of 56,133 students from the 2020-21 school year to the 2024-25 school year.

In the 2024-25 school year, Public School students made up 65 per cent of the student population including all schools and authorities.

Complexity Teams

From our sampling of member Public School Boards, 90 per cent of the Complexity Teams created in 2025-26 were fully staffed by the end of the school year. NOTE: This does not include the additional teams the provincial government announced for the 2026-27 school year.

School Projects

From our sampling of Public School Boards, there are 44 active school projects.

  • There are 20 New Builds.
  • There are 14 Replacement Builds.
  • There are 8 Modernizations.
  • There are 2 Expansions/Additions.

Almost half of the school projects for our member Public School Boards are in the Planning Phase.

A third of school projects are in the Design Phase, and less than a quarter are in the Construction Phase.

More than two-thirds of the school boards have active school projects, while less than a third do not have active school projects.

Modular Classrooms

From our sampling of Public School Boards, 26 modular classrooms were completed in the 2025-26 school year.

There are 61 modular classrooms approved for the 2026-27 school year.
